Hawaii Prep wouldn’t let another one get away.

Jonah Hurney fired 6 2/3 innings of shutout ball, and Finn Richmond stranded the bases loaded as Ka Makani prevailed over Konawaena 3-0 in a BIIF Division II baseball game on Tuesday in Waimea.

In the seventh, Hurney got two quick outs then hit Drew Basque and walked No. 9 hitter James Kapela. Richmond replaced Hurney and walked Bronson Rivera to load the bases.

But the senior right-hander got an 0-2 count on AJ Allred, who grounded out Hurney at second base, splitting the regular-season series.

On March 12 at Gabby Inaba Field, the Wildcats rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to topple HPA 8-7.

Hurney allowed four hits and three walks and struck out eight for the win. Richmond recorded one out for the save.

Stevie Texeira pitched five innings and gave up three runs on five hits and five walks in the loss. He struck out six and threw 107 pitches, the same number as Hurney. Kolu Alani pitched a scoreless inning.

Both Hurney and Texeira will be eligible to pitch again on Saturday.

In the second inning, Ka Makani catcher Ry Bleckel reached on a hit by pitch, Nalu Shimizu singled, and Daniel Groves walked. Nate Heymann hit a sacrifice fly to center field, and Shimizu later scored on a wild pitch.

HPA increased the lead to 3-0 in the third when Sheldon Aribal singled, Shimizu walked, and Aribal later stole a base and scored on a wild pitch.

Hurney batted 2 for 4 for Ka Makani (6-5).

Alani went 2 for 3 to lead the Wildcats (5-4).

Kamehameha (10-0) has already clinched the league’s first HHSAA Division II state berth with the regular-season title. The other state spot will be up for grabs in the four-team BIIF playoffs.

Kala’i Rosario had three RBIs, Khaden Victorino added two RBIs, and Stone Miyao batted 2 for 3 to lead the Warriors (8-0), who had 13 hits.
