Two individuals were rescued Monday in separate incidents along Big Island shorelines, according to written Hawaii Fire Department statements.

In the first incident, police summoned fire rescuers shortly before noon to assist in locating a 75-year-old man in Hawaiian Paradise Park in Puna.

While ground units combed the area where the man was last scene, a county helicopter spotted him under an overhang among 15- to 25-foot-high cliffs along the end of Beach Road off Paradise Drive.

The man was extricated by a rescue swimmer and the chopper flew him to a nearby ambulance, which took him to Hilo Medical Center for treatment of head trauma.

In the second incident, the Fire Department received a call shortly before 4 p.m. reporting a swimmer in distress at South Point Landing at the “Ladders” mooring area in Ka‘u.

A woman in her 30s was found hanging off a ladder at the popular but potentially dangerous recreation spot. A firefighter entered the water to assist the woman until the arrival of a county helicopter, which lifted both from the water.

The swimmer suffered minor scrapes to her legs, officials said.
