Calling all quilters on Hawaii Island

Volcano Art Center announces a call to artists for its second biannual quilt show, “Quilts in the Forest – Where the Path May Lead,” opening July 13 at VAC’s Ni‘aulani Campus.

“Quilts in the Forest” is open to all full-time and part-time residents of Hawaii Island, whether they are amateur or professional quilters. This year’s show hopes to inspire quilters to explore new and innovative ways in quilting. The prospectus and entry forms are available online at http://volcanoartcenter.org/gallery/call-to-artists.

The deadline to register is May 26. The quilts will be on display through Aug. 4.

Hilo Scout earns rank of Eagle

Mark J. Nemeth of Hilo recently was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, Scouting’s highest rank, by the Aloha Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Nemeth’s Eagle project was a gravel walkway at the HOPE Services family shelter in Hilo, assisted by his fellow Scouts from Troop 1078 of Higashi Hongwanji and Scouts from Troop 1082 of Hilo Meishoin.

A 2017 graduate of St. Joseph School, Nemeth is a freshman at Pacific University in Oregon. He is the son of Stephen Nemeth and Ann Usagawa of Hilo.

Toastmaster wins speech contest

Hilo Toastmasters Club member Springer Kaye was the first-place winner of the Hawaii Island Area 12 TableTopics Contest on March 17 in Waimea.

Kaye will advance to Division C contests Saturday on Oahu. Winners of that contest will compete at the District No. 49 convention May 5 at the University of Hawaii-Manoa Campus Center Ballroom.

“We are so proud of Springer,” Hilo club president Cary Deringer said of Kaye, a first-year member. “She can think quickly on her feet, organize her thoughts and say what she has to say in a short amount of time, all excellent qualities for TableTopics competition.”
