UH-Hilo senior Cyanne Fernandez got roughed up in a 5-3 loss to Dominician on Friday in San Rafael, Calif.

But Leah Gonzales pitched like an ace in an 11-3 win in the second game to salvage a doubleheader split.

Gonzales tossed a seven-hitter for the Vulcans (23-11, 11-5 PacWest).

Bailey Gaspar batted 3 for 4 with three RBIs, Mari Kawano had three hits while Skylar Thomas and Maria Steadmon each had two RBIs.

In Game 1, Fernandez went 3 1/3 innings in the loss and allowed five runs.

Gonzales followed with 2 2/3 innings of no-run relief. She whiffed four and walked none.

Brinell Kaleikini was the only Vul to pair hits off Gabby Katafias, who fired a four-hitter for the Penguins (13-25, 4-14).

• Baseball

Dixie State defeated UHH 14-12, pounding 20 hits and scoring eight runs off Dylan Spain, who lasted 1 2/3 innings and allowed 11 hits.

Phillip Steering batted 2 for 4 with three RBIs, Jonathan Segovia 2 for 5, and Kila Zuttermeister went 3 for 5 for the Vuls (11-15, 7-11), who have lost four straight.
