Hundreds of Hawaii Island residents might participate in “March For Our Lives” rallies for gun control today in Hilo and Waimea.

The marches are among more than 800 taking place throughout the country today, in the wake of the Valentine’s Day school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

The Hilo sign-waving rally runs from 1-3 p.m. along Kanoelehua Avenue across from Prince Kuhio Plaza between Hopaco and the Puainako Street intersection. It’s being organized by the MoveOn Hamakua group.

The Waimea march begins at 10 a.m. in front of Church Row. It’s being organized by students at Parker School in partnership with the North Hawaii Action Network.

The rallies come a little more than a week after thousands of students throughout the country participated in National Walkout Day, also a protest against gun violence.
