Throughout the month of March, Discount Fabric Warehouse stores statewide are collecting completed handcrafted quilts for donation to various local charities in observance of National Quilt Month.

Big Island residents who would like to help are encouraged to donate completed handcrafted, not purchased, new or like-new quilts at the Discount Fabric Warehouse stores in Hilo or Kona.

Donations of cotton fabric or batting are also welcome. Community quilting groups will make these donations into quilts. Quilts do not have be elaborate or complicated, but it is asked that they are well-made and “made with love.”

The Hilo and Kona stores will donate quilts to the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center of East Hawaii and HOPE Services Hawaii.

The nonprofit Friends of the Children’s Justice Center of East Hawaii maintains a clothes closet to help fill the needs of documented abused and neglected children. The Friends think having a quilt that is “just their own” can make a difficult circumstance a bit less traumatic for children.

HOPE Services Hawaii collects much-needed items such as clothing, bedding, food and toiletries throughout the year for families and individuals most vulnerable in our community.

For each donation, up to five per person, people will receive a $5 Discount Fabric Warehouse gift card as a thank you.
