With the latest round of college tennis rankings set to be released, the UH-Hilo men aren’t just holding serve, they’re coming up aces.
The Vulcans have yet to find a non-Division II team they can’t handle, brushing aside San Diego Christian on Tuesday 6-0 in La Jolla, Calif., for their sixth consecutive victory.
The road will soon get tougher, but the only blemish so far in 10 matches for No. 15 UH-Hilo came against Southern Utah Division I when on March 11 in Las Vegas.
Despite that 5-2 defeat, the Vulcans were one of the best bets last week in Sin City, winning three matches against ranked opponents to give them six such wins on the season.
“It was another great effort today against another really good team,” coach Tina McDermott said in a release last week after a victory against No. 14 Rollins. “I have said all along that our hard work would pay off, and it is beginning to do so. This was a tough grind of matches, with many more to come, and each one of these makes us more match-ready for the next one.”
Ahead of heavier lifting to come later on the trip – especially March 27 at No. 6 Azusa Pacific – the Vulcans enjoyed a light workload Tuesday against the NAIA Hawks, talking all three doubles matches and the top two in singles to win the “clinch” format.
Vaclav Slezak and Alessandro Giuliato both improved to 9-1 on the season. Slezak defeated Alonso Tellez 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, while Giuliato edged Aliaksandr Meliuk, 7-5, 7-5.
Slezak and Giuliato cruised at No. 1 doubles, while Gregory Zukeran and Chun En Wu won at No. 3 doubles 8-5. Alex Fillat Perez and Bruno Figlia eventually took down Nick Bell and Innocent Tidimane, 8-7 (7-3).
In the midst of a three-week road trip to end the regular season, the Vulcans get three day off before testing Concordia-Irvine.
On the women’s side, UHH fell to San Diego Christian to fall to 6-4 on the season, getting wins from Sara Marin (No. 3), Carmelle Joyner (No. 5) and Irena Le and Marin (No. 3).
