Police arrest 19 for DUI

During the week of March 12-18, Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents.

The numbers of arrests by district were:

• Kona, seven.

• Puna, five.

• South Hilo, three.

• South Kohala, two.

• Hamakua and Ka‘u, one each.

So far this year, there have been 233 DUI arrests compared with 274 during the same period last year, a decrease of 15 percent.

There have been 258 major accidents so far this year compared to 294 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12.2 percent.

To date, there have been seven fatalities compared with five at the same time last year, an increase of 40 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
