Jonah Hurney enjoyed a big day at the plate Tuesday as he and Michael Hughes each homered, and Hawaii Prep went on the road to beat Honokaa 15-3 in a BIIF baseball season-opener.

Hurney finished 4 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs scored.

Finn Richmond pitched three shutout innings, allowing three hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Canen Perreira took the loss for the Dragons, yielding five runs and four hits in 3 2/3 innings.

He struck out two and walked one.

Chad Yanagisawa had two hits for Honokaa.

Sheldon Aribal doubled for HPA, scored two runs and pitched the final two innings. He fanned three, while walking two and giving up three hits and three runs.

Waiakea cruises

Brandee Chinen collected three hits and drove in three runs, Alize Ka’apana hit a grand slam and three different Waiakea pitchers threw a hitless inning as the Warriors beat Pahoa 24-0 in a BIIF softball opener at their field.

Waiakea finished with 16 hits. Johnacy Mackwelung homered and tripled in going 3 for 3 with two RBIs, and Shaily Moses doubled and tripled in driving in two. Chinen cracked two doubles and Ka’apana was 3 for 3 with five RBIs.

Halee Sweat, Jolene Hirata and Tristen Cullio each pitched for Waiakea.
