Boys &Girls Club of the Big Island invites the community to its 2018 Youth of the Year celebration and fundraiser at 5:30 p.m. March 2 at Hilo Hawaiian Hotel’s Moku Ola Ballroom.

“The Youth of the Year event will be an inspiring evening filled with youth member performances that will warm your heart with ‘oli, mele, mo‘olelo and kalena to celebrate ‘ohana, community and ‘aina,” said Chad Cabral, BGCBI chief executive officer.

The event also will include a banquet-style meal, silent and live auctions, guest speakers and recognition of outstanding community supporters.

The Youth of the Year program is Boys &Girls Club of America’s premier youth recognition program for club members. The program promotes and celebrates service to club, community and family, academic performance, moral character, life goals and poise and public speaking ability.

Along with awarding the Big Island Youth of the Year, BGCBI will honor community supporters who have been instrumental in the club’s success.

William Walter was named Honoree of the Year and Russell Chin the Champion of Youth.

Walter served as board chairman of BGCBI from 2009-11. He helped bring stability and executive expertise to BGCBI during his terms on the board and continues to serve as a valued adviser. He is chairman and CEO of W.H. Shipman Ltd.

Chin is being honored for his generous support and steadfast commitment to Hawaii Island youth. He was a BGCBI board member for more than 10 years and led its annual Tee Off for Kids golf tournament fundraiser. Chin is Matson district manager for Hawaii Island.
