Repairs to the Hakalau Stream Bridge have begun.

The one-lane span, used to access Hakalau Beach Park, closed February 2017 because of erosion around its foundation.

Hawaii County said repairs began Friday and should be complete April 17.

The project previously was delayed to avoid impacting the Hawaiian hawk’s breeding season. Getting approval through state and federal agencies also added to delays, according to the county.

Eighty percent of the $1.6 million project is funded by the federal government.
