HFS Federal Credit Union scholarship applications due
HFS Federal Credit Union is still accepting applications for its 2018 scholarship program.
To apply, students can download the application at www.hfsfcu.org/news/2018Scholarship, pick one up at any HFS FCU branch islandwide or inquire with their high school counselors.
Completed applications with supporting documents must be submitted to the credit union or postmarked no later than Feb. 28.
The scholarship program was created as a means to support Big Island students in achieving their goals of higher education and making college more affordable for local students. This year, HFS FCU will award seven $2,500 scholarships totaling $17,500 to graduating Big Island high school seniors.

Church to honor Hawaiian Christian
The historic Haili Church will commemorate the 200th anniversary of the death of Henry Opukahaia with a special service at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, 211 Haili St.
The service will celebrate the significant life of Opukahaia, one of the first Hawaiian Christian converts who originated the Hawaiian alphabet and inspired the Sandwich Island Mission and Protestant missionaries to come with the Gospel to Hawaii in the 19th century.
Kahu Brian Welsh and Wendell Davis will preside over the service and will be joined by the Daughters of God Hula Ministry, along with the Na Kane and Wahine of Hoomana Ke Akua. A free lunch will be provided directly after the event in the church’s multipurpose room.
The “Memoirs of Henry Obookiah” will be available for purchase from the Woman’s Board of Missions for the Pacific Islands.

Walk, talk with island historian
Talk story with Hawaii Island historian Bobby Camara and join him for a walk at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hualalai Resort interpretive center.
Camara will share his knowledge and love of the Hualalai area’s cultural and natural history. The event, sponsored by E Mau Na Ala Hele, is free and open to the public. All interested are welcome although the facility has a limit of 35 people
Preregistration is required. Participants should bring water and sun protection, a brown bag lunch and wear closed-toe shoes for walking on rough, unpaved terrain.
