Carol Furuike Berk, 91, of Kailua-Kona died Jan. 24 at home. Born in Kahuku, Hawaii, she was an executive assistant for J.C. Electronics, owner of the former Carol’s Collectibles and secretary for Dodo Mortuary-Kona, Kona Hospital business office and Honolulu Medical Group and member of West Hawaii Humane Society and Mokuaikaua Congregational Church. Private services on Oahu. Survived by daughter, Heather Crockett of Kailua-Kona; sons, Brent (Sue) Berk of Hawaii Kai, Oahu, and Scott (Gina) Berk of Oceanside, Calif.; sister, Joyce Sasaki of Kaimuki, Oahu; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Mardina Erry, 86, of Honokaa died Jan. 22. She was born in Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia. Services 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at Ballard Family Mortuary, 570 Kinoole St. in Hilo. Alfred Mitsuji Furusho, 79, of Hilo died Dec. 28, 2017. He was a computer programmer for Tab Services in Chicago and Jack’s Tours. Wanda Mary Gardner, 73, of Volcano, formerly of Chicago, died Dec. 24, 2017, at home. Born in Santa Rosa, Mexico, she was retired from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, had worked for the former Michael Reese Hospital, both in Chicago, and was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church. Friends are welcome to attend a memorial Mass at 11 a.m. Friday (Feb. 16) at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Mountain View. Suzanne Marie Kanavel-King, 75, of Holualoa died Nov. 21 at home. Born in Santa Barbara, Calif., she was a registered nurse at several California hospitals, volunteered in orphanages for children with HIV in Guatemala and Cambodia and worked in several restaurants and bars in Kodiak, Alaska. No local services. Memorial service on Saturday, May 19, in Kodiak. The family thanks Hospice of Kona. Survived by husband, Charles King of Holualoa; son, Nick Martinelli of Holualoa; daughter, Lisa (Tom) Connell of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada; sister, Karen (Doug) Diefenderfer of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; hanai son, Oliver Twist King; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a niece and a nephew. Guy B. Shepard, 75, of Hilo died Dec. 12 in Hilo. Born in Fairmont, W.Va., he worked on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., as a young man, later became an accountant, was active in the Hawaii Green Party and Hilo Orchid Society and served as treasurer for several local community organizations.
