Walk/run to support brain tumor research
The community is invited to participate in Nichole’s Fight Against Time 5K Walk/Run with registration starting at 6:45 a.m. Saturday at Keaau Shipman Park.
Zumba warm-up will be from 7:45-8:15 a.m. followed by the 5K run and other activities, events and entertainment until 4 p.m.
The live entertainment lineup features Braddah Waltah, Dru Kekaualua, Loeka Longakit, Ben Kaili &Ani and The Role Players. There also will be a food concession, kids games, keiki ID booth, craft vendors and lucky number drawings.
There is a $10 registration fee for the walk/run. All proceeds will go toward the American Brain Tumor Association in remembrance of Nichole Perreira-Pagatpatan of Hilo.

Little fire ant town hall slated
Got fire ants?
The public is invited to attend a town hall panel discussion about little fire ant control methods with experts in the field from 6-8 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Keaau Community Center, 16-186 Pili Mua St.
The event will be hosted by Puna Councilwoman Jen Ruggles. Topics of discussion will include effective treatment methods, community programs, the status of fire ants at the Hawaii County green waste facilities and fire ant issues specific to attendees.
The Hawaii Ant Lab, Big Island Invasive Species Committee and the Little Fire Ant Hui will be presenting followed by a question and answer session. Refreshments will also be provided.
Forest institute receives $10K grant
The Hawaii Community Foundation recently awarded $10,000 in grant funding to the Hawaii Forest Institute, formed by the Hawaii Forest Industry Association in 2003 to promote the health and productivity of Hawaii’s forests through forest management, educational programs, information dissemination and support for scientific research.
Hawaii Community Foundation’s FLEX Grants Program supports nonprofits that demonstrate the importance of their organizations to the community and capture and use information to continually improve their programs.
Library observing Engineers Week
Thelma Parker Memorial Public Library in Waimea, in observance of Engineers Week, is hosting an Engineering Bash from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 24.
The free, family-friendly NASA@My Library event is being presented in collaboration with Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, Pohakuloa Training Area and the W.M. Keck Observatory.
Meet some of the island’s most talented engineers and discover the amazing world of engineering through indoor and outdoor hands-on experiments, demonstrations and displays.
Event highlights include Alka Seltzer rocket making and rocket launching, a mobile, solar-powered trailer capable of powering multiple major appliances, hydrostatic bearing demonstrations, infrared camera activities, marshmallow catapult making, and balloon drop experiments.
