KAILUA-KONA — The Hawaii Fire Department said a man drowned Monday in Ka‘u.

Emergency responders arrived on scene about 4:30 p.m. after being notified about two swimmers in distress at South Point Landing. After arriving, responders discovered a woman in her 20s on shore with minor scrapes, but visual contact with a male swimmer had been lost.

A Good Samaritan on a boat was able to assist with the location of the victim. C-1 and HFD Rescue personnel located, then free dived to recover the victim, who was described as a male in his 20s. His body was found in about 50 feet of water.

HFD also said it called off the search for the woman swept away Jan. 26 at Piihonua Falls in Hilo, pending new developments.
