College basketball: UC Santa Barbara downs Hawaii 84-82 in OT

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Max Heidegger scored 25 points, Jalen Canty added 21 with 10 rebounds, and UC Santa Barbara beat Hawaii 84-82 in overtime on Thursday night to win its fifth straight Big West Conference game and 10th straight at home.

Leland King II scored 21 points and Gabe Vincent 10 with six assists for the Gauchos (17-5, 6-2).

Heidegger and King each hit 3s for a 76-72 Gauchos lead and Canty’s layup made it 78-74 after Hawaii missed 3 of 4 from the field to begin overtime. Hawaii closed to 78-76 on Michael Thomas’ layup with 1:04 left, but King’s jumper gave the Gauchos a four-point edge.

The teams traded free throws and Hawaii closed to 83-82 on Jack Purchase’s 3 with 9 seconds left. King iced it with a free throw and Marcus Jackson blocked Brocke Stepteau’s jumper with a second left.

The Gauchos led 36-30 at halftime and Stepteau tied it with a 3 at the end of regulation.

Thomas scored 25 points with 10 rebounds, Stepteau had 15 points and Gibson Johnson 10 for Hawaii (13-7, 4-3).

Women

Cal Poly 52, Hawaii 50: Lynn Leaupepe’s three-point play with 38 seconds remaining helped send the Rainbow Wahine (9-13, 2-7 Big West) to their fifth consecutive road loss.

Sarah Toeaina finished with a team-high 13 points and five rebounds, but she was charged with an offensive foul with 4.5 seconds remaining and Tia Kanoa’s last-second shot was off the mark.

The Mustangs (12-8, 6-2 Big West) trailed by as many as seven in the fourth quarter, but Dynn Leaupepe scored on three consecutive possessions, finishing with 26 points.
