John Peter Apolei Lima, 67, of Waikoloa died Jan. 2 at Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua in Honokaa. Born in Kealakekua, he was a retired laborer, a member of Kuka‘ilimoku Village Association and Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Waikoloa. Alfredo Cortez Madriaga, 74, of Naalehu died Jan. 16 at Hospice of Kona’s Nakamaru Hale in Holualoa. Born in Bantay, Ilocos Sur, the Philippines, he was a planter for the former Ka‘u Agribusiness and member of Ka‘u Filipino Community Club and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Richard “Mike” Rankin, 79, of Chiang Rai, Thailand, formerly of Hilo, died Jan. 24, in Chiang Rai. Born in Topeka, Kan., he founded the Hilo Farmers Market in 1988. Survived by wife, Dow, and stepson, Non.

Marie Elizabeth Smith, 89, of Kalapana died Jan. 24 at home. Born in Spargursville, Ohio, she was a retired Realtor and homemaker.
