UH-Hilo student earns Semester at Sea Scholarship
University of Hawaii at Hilo student Lindsay Johnson received a Semester at Sea Scholarship in the amount of $16,533 to participate in the spring 2018 SAS voyage.
Johnson, a junior majoring in environmental science, is on a 102-day, around-the-world visit to 11 countries and 15 cities on four continents that began Jan. 5 from San Diego.
The UH-Hilo Semester at Sea Scholarship Program is a cooperative partnership between UH-Hilo and the Institute for Shipboard Education. The program’s aim is to provide a unique learning experience and broaden a student’s global perspective to create leaders for the future.
The Semester at Sea Scholarship is available to full-time and classified UH-Hilo students who meet the following criteria:
• Acceptance to Semester at Sea Program
• 3.0 UH-Hilo GPA
• 24 completed college credits
• Financial need
• Excellent recommendation
• Preference to first-generation college students

American Association of University Women Scholarships available
The Hilo branch of the American Association of University Women invites women attending the University of Hawaii at Hilo to apply for scholarships.
Applications must be submitted by March 20. In 2018, AAUW plans to make awards totaling $6,000.
AAUW will conduct a workshop titled “Writing an Effective Scholarship Application” to improve applicants’ success in applying at noon Feb. 5 and 3 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Kilohana Writing Center at UH-Hilo.
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be female graduates of a Big Island high school or a female student at UH-Hilo with resident status in East Hawaii. Additionally applicants must be enrolled in a baccalaureate degree or post-baccalaureate degree/certificate program at the UH-Hilo and have at least junior status (60 or more credits) at the beginning of the academic year for which the scholarship is sought.
The mission of AAUW is “advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.”
Every year, AAUW sponsors multiple fundraising events to raise money for scholarships for women in East Hawaii as well as a variety of educational programs focused on empowering women and girls.
