John Henry Callender, 76, of Waimea died Jan. 19. Born in Pasadena, Calif., he was CEO of Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., and had degrees in animal science and business administration from Oregon State University. Hitoshi Futagami, 63, of Hilo died Jan. 16 at Hawaii Care Choices’ (formerly Hospice of Hilo) Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Ehime, Japan, he was a retired exporter of agricultural products, graduate of Nodai (Tokyo University of Agriculture) and president of Nodai Club. Visitation 10-11 a.m. Monday (Jan. 29) at Hilo Hooganji Mission. Memorial service at 11 a.m. Casual attire. Romaldo “Romie” Madarang Sr., 83, of Paauilo died Jan. 12 at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born in Kukuihaele, he was a retired Hawaii Fire Department captain, U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran and member of the former St. Joseph Catholic Church in Paauilo. Private services held. Survived by fiancee, Crispina Quitoriano; sons, Romaldo Madarang Jr. and Rendall (Helencia) Madarang; daughter, Natalie Gonsales; sisters, Marchuma “Mollie” Solomon and Felicia “Fely” Rosario; brother, Sylvester (Edel) Madarang; sister-in-law, Julia Cuaresna; brother-in-law, Joseph Estencion; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. Daniel Walter “Danny” Miller, 54, of Pahoa died Jan. 15 at home. He was an award-winning filmmaker whose documentaries include “The Punalu‘u Experience,” “Ho‘okele Wa‘a — Turning the Canoe” and “Na Kupu Mana‘olana — Seeds of Hope.” He had three unfinished films in the works: “The Legacy of Katsu Goto,” “The Visionary World of Paul Lehr” and “Letters for Kyoto.” Memorial celebration 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday (Jan. 26) at Honokaa Hongwanji.
