KAILUA-KONA — A Kailua-Kona man wanted on sex assault and kidnapping charges turned himself in last week after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

James Tan, 37, surrendered himself to authorities Friday at the Kealakehe police station. He was later released on $10,000 bail.

On Dec. 4, a grand jury indicted Tan on two counts of first-degree sexual assault, kidnapping and first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred April 16, 2017. According to police, Tan ran into the victim while downtown April 15, 2017. The two were acquaintances.

Police say the assault allegedly occurred in the morning the next day outside a public establishment on Alii Drive.

Part of the alleged assault also happened inside the vehicle the victim was driving that night.

A warrant for Tan’s arrest was issued Dec. 29, 2017.
