Allie Navarette had a nearly perfect shooting night to lead the UH-Hilo women’s basketball team over Holy Names 69-56 on Thursday in Oakland, Calif.
She scored 22 points on 6 of 7 shooting and 10 of 11 free throws. She just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
Safia Sheikh and Danielle Dacosta each added 17 points for the Vulcans (6-5, 4-4 PacWest), who won their second consecutive game.
The Hawks (2-16, 1-9) dropped their fourth straight and were outscored 23-12 in the fourth quarter.
UHH held Holy Names scoreless over the final two minutes and sank 19 of 23 from the free throw line.
In the fourth quarter, the Hawks tied it 46-46 but Sheikh scored, and the Vulcans never trailed again.
The Vuls wrap up a four-game road trip playing Dominican at 2 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the men’s game.
In the men’s game, Holy Names edged UHH 87-85 in overtime on a go-ahead jump shot by Jacob Dean with 1:50 remaining.
UHH’s Cleo Cain scored with 1:34 left, then Ryley Callaghan missed a 3-pointer with 44 seconds to go, and Trey Ingram missed a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining.
Ingram scored 33 points, Callaghan and Eric Wattree 13 points each, and Randan Berinobis had 10 points for the Vuls (4-11, 3-5), who lost their fourth straight game.
In the second half, the Vuls led 81-79 with 1:02 remaining but couldn’t close out the game.
Dean scored on a layup to tie it 81-81 with 12 seconds to play.
UHH’s Anthony Canencia missed a free throw with 10 seconds on the clock that sent the game into OT.
Alonzo Taylor scored 22 points to lead the Hawks (8-12, 4-6), who snapped a three-game losing streak.
