Current, former and prospective members as well as other interested people are invited to attend the League of Women Voters of Hawaii County winter meeting Jan. 20 at Tex Drive-In in Honokaa.

The guest speaker will be Janet Mason, co-chairwoman of the state LWV’s legislative committee. Her talk is titled “A is for Advocacy: Democracy at the Legislature.”

Registration and lunch orders are from 9:30-10 a.m., meeting and speaker 10-11 a.m. followed by a no-host lunch and board meeting.

Mason, who also is a board member of the Honolulu League and previously served as state league vice president, worked for more than 17 years as insurance risk manager for island publicly traded firms. A graduate of Simmons College in Boston with a bachelor’s degree in sociology, Mason has a master’s in social work from the University of Michigan and an M.B.A. from Boston College.

Mason will highlight likely top issues for the 2018 Hawaii Legislature and what the League of Women Voters has selected as its agenda for the session. What bills can help make democracy work and how will League members have an impact?

Program planning follows Mason’s talk. Program planning is an important League tool for identifying issues for study and advocacy. It gives League members the opportunity to balance the pros and cons, assess possible support and consider the viability of issues.

Membership in the LWV is open to all citizens of voting age. Noncitizens and citizens not yet of voting age can be associate members.
