The state Department of Health reports that the number of confirmed mumps cases in Hawaii Island adults and children climbed to 108.
As of Thursday, 770 people statewide have had confirmed cases since 2016, including 610 in Honolulu City and County, 108 in Hawaii County, 49 in Kauai County and three in Maui County.
So far, 21 people have had complications such as deafness and testicular swelling, which the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says happens less than 1 percent of the time and about 3 percent of the time, respectively, in recent outbreaks.
Anyone age 10 and older, born after 1956, is advised to get an “outbreak vaccination” against mumps with the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine.
