Volunteer with AARP in 2018

If making East Hawaii a better place to live is on your agenda for 2018, consider becoming an AARP Hawaii volunteer.

AARP volunteers work with Hawaii’s congressional delegation, the Legislature and county governments to advocate for caregivers and kupuna and to protect Medicare and Social Security. Community service volunteers work on projects in the community to better people’s lives. Speakers and communications volunteers also work with social media and traditional media to help spread the word about AARP.

A volunteer orientation is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. Jan. 11 at the Aging and Disability Resource Center, 1055 Kinoole St. in Hilo. To reserve a spot, call 877-926-8300 or go visit https://aarp.cvent.com/welcome1-11.

Fee-free day Jan. 15 at HVNP

The National Park Service announced there will be no entrance fee on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 15, at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Three other days in 2018 will be fee-free at all national parks: April 21 (first day of National Park Week); Sept. 22 (National Public Lands Day) and Nov. 11 (Veterans Day).
