In observance of Volcano Awareness Month, three “Mauna Loa: Let’s Talk Story” community programs are scheduled for January on the Big Island.
The programs are free and open to the public at the following times, dates and locations:
• Noon-3 p.m. Jan. 13 at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, UCB 127.
• 6-8 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Ocean View Community Center in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.
• Noon-3 p.m. Jan. 27 at the Konawaena Elementary School Cafeteria in Kona.
Come and go at your leisure between the times listed for the three locations. View informative displays about Mauna Loa volcano and talk story with scientists, public safety officials and park rangers.
Bring your questions. Displays will address frequently asked questions about Mauna Loa, such as its current status, hazards and how to prepare for a future eruption.
Children can engage in activities and demonstrations set up just for them.
The community program is a collaboration of the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, Hawaii County Civil Defense, UH-Hilo Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
