A mechanical malfunction is to blame for an emergency warning siren blaring in Panaewa on Wednesday morning.

Hawaii County Civil Defense received a call from a resident at 7:15 a.m. that one of the sirens managed by Hawaii Emergency Management Agency was active.

Civil Defense spokeswoman Kanani Aton said the resident reported the siren blaring for about 30 seconds at at time every five minutes.

Within a few minutes of the call, Civil Defense transmitted a cancel tone to turn the siren off, Aton said.

She said the agency has not received any additional reports since.
