Keane-Zen Sakane, a six-year member of Boy Scout Troop 19, recently was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout during a Court of Honor.
Sakane’s Eagle Scout service project involved improvements to Hawaii County’s Malama Park in Panaewa.
Sakane and his parents, Miles and Suya Sakane, all active in the sport of archery, have been patrons of Malama Park’s archery range. Having a deep concern for the safety of families who use the park, Sakane and his team of Troop 19 Scouts, parents and friends constructed a hog wire fence to separate the archery range with the adjoining ball field.
Warning signs were placed along the fence and a new Malama Park sign and signage with park rules were erected as well. The archery range was expanded to 30 feet wide by 1,200 feet long with a bulldozer. And a new 14-foot picnic table was assembled and two indigenous kou trees were planted.
Jeffrey Ochi, county parks project manager, served as Sakane’s project coordinator.
Sakane is a senior at Waiakea High School. He plans to attend the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, majoring in business law.
Troop 19, led by Scoutmaster Glenn Sako, is sponsored by the Waiakea Lions Club and supported by the United Community Church.
