A $17 million road improvement project for Kalanianaole Avenue in Hilo is scheduled to begin in January, according to the Hawaii County Department of Public Works.

The work will occur from about Kamehameha Avenue to the Hilo Harbor.

Improvements will include sidewalks, a bike lane and left-turn lane, in addition to repaving.

The county’s share of the project is about $12.3 million, while the state is covering the rest, said Public Works spokesman Barrett Otani.

Contractor Goodfellow Bros. was given a notice to proceed date of Jan. 8, 2018, he said.

Otani said the work could be complete in late 2019. Detours will be in place.
