Viking Battalion hosts Big Island Adventure Challenge: Hilo High JROTC females prevail in team event

The Hilo High School Army JROTC female team completed its mission by taking first place during the inaugural Big Island Adventure Challenge hosted by the Viking Battalion on Oct. 28 at the Hawaii Army National Guard complex at Hilo airport.

The Hilo High School Army JROTC female team completed its mission by taking first place during the inaugural Big Island Adventure Challenge hosted by the Viking Battalion on Oct. 28 at the Hawaii Army National Guard complex at Hilo airport.

Male and female cadets from Hilo, Konawaena and Kealakehe High Schools competed in the daylong event. The competition required cadets to complete a series of vigorous exercises. Tasks included a 2-mile run, an Army physical fitness test, a navigation course and a Humvee pull.

Earning the first-place female team trophy from Hilo were “Raiders” team leader Mitra Toomey, Kendra Puleo, Franchesca De vera-Dias and Arianna Wilson.

In the male competition, the Hilo cadets placed second. Team members were Dylan Kahaleua-Kelly, Bito Gervias, Kaulana Aiona, Christian Lopez, Preston Mendoza, Brandon Murata, Kanoah Macomber and Melitina Holika.

“We’re very proud of all the participants and can’t wait till next year,” Kahaleua-Kelly said.
