People from nearby residences and businesses provided county Department of Public Works crews a helping hand Monday, making for the quick removal of a royal poinciana tree that fell, blocking the northbound lane of Kuakini Highway in Kona. The tree fell shortly after 3 p.m. near the intersection with Hualalai Road, blocking the northbound lane of the highway. Southbound traffic continued to flow normally. Northbound traffic was detoured onto Alii Drive, causing traffic to snarl in areas. The road was cleared and reopened to both directions of travel shortly before 5 p.m. No injuries were reported and no property was damaged, police said.
