Hawai‘i Nei exhibit reception is today

Hawai‘i Nei, a juried art exhibition, opens with a youth reception at 4:30 p.m. and formal reception and award ceremony for the adult division at 5:30 p.m. today at the Wailoa Center.

Hosted by the Three Mountain Alliance, Natural Area Reserves System and Wailoa Center, Hawai‘i Nei features amateur and professional artists who submitted works of art celebrating the native plants, animals and habitats of Hawaii Island.​

Winners of each category will be announced and prizes awarded along with live music, a photo booth and refreshments. Come dressed as your favorite native species for the annual costume contest at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome.

Bazaar to benefit Hilo mission

The annual Hilo Hooganji Mission bazaar is scheduled for 7:30-11 a.m. Saturday at 457 Manono St. near the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo.

This year’s event features fresh produce and plants on a first-come, first-get basis, as well as sushi, katsu curry bento, nishime, pickles and preserves, sushi and assorted rice dishes, baked goods, manju and lots of snacks and goodies.

Rummage sale items include clothing, kimono and other ethnic apparel, antiques and collectibles, furniture, appliances, books and toys, craft items and more. All proceeds go toward building maintenance and repair and continued community outreach.

Fellowship hosting holiday craft fair

The Women’s Fellowship of Puna Covenant Church invites everyone to its holiday craft fair from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the church on Old Volcano Highway in Keaau.

Proceeds from the fair will go to further the many charitable works of the ministry.

“We’ve made it a tradition to package gifts for women in the Domestic Violence Shelter, to support children of abuse, to contribute to missionaries overseas… and to help bring fellowship and love to people in East Hawaii,” said Marcia Prose, chairwoman of the annual event.

Shipman Park play area closed

The county Department of Parks and Recreation announces the temporary closure of the playground equipment area in Herbert Shipman Park through March 1, 2018, for resurfacing and repairs.

The project consists of removing rubber playground surfacing and replacing it with turf, along with other repairs. The playground equipment area will be blocked off with safety barricades during this construction period.

The rest of the park, including the pavilion, soccer fields and outdoor courts, will remain open during the project.
