A Hilo man was killed and a Mountain view woman critically injured Saturday after a two-vehicle crash on Saddle Road.

A Hilo man was killed and a Mountain view woman critically injured Saturday after a two-vehicle crash on Saddle Road.

According to a Hawaii Police Department news release, a 49-year-old Hilo man was westbound on the Daniel K. Inouye Highway at 7:21 a.m. Saturday. Near the 38-mile marker, the man overtook another vehicle and struck an eastbound vehicle head-on.

The Hilo man and the driver of the other vehicle were transported to the North Hawaii Community Hospital. The man was pronounced dead at 8:42 p.m.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 36-year-old Mountain View woman, was listed in critical condition.

Police reportedly belive that speed, not drugs or alcohol, was a factor in the crash. Police also note that the man was not wearing a seatbelt, while the woman was.

Alan Richmond, media relations officer with the Hawaii Police Department, said the names of the victims will be withheld pending positive identification and notification of their families.

Witnesses to the crash are encouraged to contact Officer Casey Cabral at (808) 961-2329.
