The Alzheimer’s Association will present a series of informational workshops during three Saturdays in November at the Aging and Disability Resource Center in Hilo.

The Alzheimer’s Association will present a series of informational workshops during three Saturdays in November at the Aging and Disability Resource Center in Hilo.

The workshops will be facilitated by Big Island program coordinator Chris Ridley.

Nov. 4

1 p.m.: “What Is Dementia?” a workshop that reviews dementia, the symptoms, warning signs, misconceptions, stages and potential treatments. It includes short videos of people with the disease, family members of people with dementia and various professionals.

3 p.m.: Alzheimer’s Association presents the movie “Away From Her.” Julie Christie won a Golden Globe award for best actress for her portrayal of Fiona, a woman with Alzheimer’s who voluntarily enters a long-term care facility to avoid being a burden on Grant, her husband of 50 years.

5 p.m.: “Living with Forgetfulness” (Part 1), for anyone who is forgetful and their significant others.

Nov. 11

1 p.m.: “Legal Aspects in Dementia,” information about advance directives, trusts, wills, Medicare, Medicaid, capacity and planning strategies.

3 p.m.: Screening of the movie “Iris.” Based on the book “Elegy for Iris” by John Bayley, this film tells the true story of English novelist Iris Murdoch’s descent into Alzheimer’s and the unconditional love of Bayley, her partner of 40 years.

5 p.m.: “Living with Forgetfulness” (Part 2).

Nov. 18

1 p.m.: “Communication and Behaviors in Dementia,” information about communication skills, possible causes and types of behaviors that might arise during the course of dementia. The focus helps understand communication problems and helps caregivers connect with the person.

3 p.m.: “I Am Not Fictional,” a video produced by three sons who took care of their mother while she suffered from dementia.

5 p.m.: “Living with Forgetfulness” (Part 3).
