Valerie “V.V.” Virginia Kalakia Andaya, 14, of Waimea died Sept. 20 at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born in Waimea, she was a sophomore at Honokaa High School, member of the student government and vocalist in the ensemble program. Edward Kaname Asato, 84, of Hilo died Sept. 29 at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born in Kohala, he was a retired equipment engineer for AT&T, U.S. Army Korean War veteran and member of the Waiakea Uka Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Visitation 10-11 a.m. Monday (Oct. 16) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel in Hilo. Memorial service at 11 a.m. Casual attire; no flowers. Loreto Escarlan Candelario, 80, of Honokaa died Sept. 20 at home. Born in Baro, Asingan, Pangasinan, the Philippines, he was a retired landscaper for the former Ritz-Carlton Mauna Lani and former employee for Watanabe Floral in Waimea. Kimiyo Ohta, 93, of Halaula, Kohala, died Sept. 29 at home. Born in Mountain View, she was a seamstress, homemaker and member of Kohala Jodo Mission Kyodan and Fujinkai and Kohala Senior Citizens Club. Norma Ukie Uemura Ah Tou, 87, of Waipahu, formerly of Captain Cook, died Sept. 17 at home. Visitation at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at Yano Hall in Captain Cook. Service at 10 a.m. No flowers. Survived by husband, Mervyn Ah Tou of Waipahu; daughter, Evelyn “Evie” Ahlo of Waipahu; sisters-in-law, Hideko Uemura of Kona, Janet Uemura of Pearl City, Oahu, and Marian Uemura of Kaneohe, Oahu; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Allan Robert Vallente, 71, of Honokaa and Kent, Wash., died Sept. 26 at Highline Memorial Hospital in Burien, Wash. Born in Honokaa, he retired from Hamakua Sugar Plantation, worked at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa. Visitation from 5-9 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 12) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Celebration of Life at 7 p.m. and again from 8-10 a.m. Monday (Oct. 16) at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa. Memorial Mass at 10 a.m. Casual attire; flowers and lei welcomed. Urn burial follows at the Honokaa Catholic Cemetery.
