The Puna Kai shopping center in Pahoa announced its official groundbreaking and blessing ceremony is slated for noon Thursday.

Puna Kai is located at the former Bryson’s Cinders on old Pahoa Village Road, according to the announcement.

The project, now overseen by developer Gary Pinkston, president and CEO of Meridian Pacific Ltd., was started by Bryson T. Kuwahara with Jon E. McElvaney, a real estate and development consultant.

Pi‘ilani Kaawaloa will officiate the blessing, with Mayor Harry Kim speaking. The community is invited for celebratory food, drink and music under the pavilion following the groundbreaking.

“Rain or shine the festivities will prevail,” McElvaney said, noting his confidence in the future of Puna Kai.

“This is a good day for Pahoa,” he said.
