The five-session series is from 10-11:30 a.m. Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31. Classes begin with a general warm-up, moving through all body parts to get the blood flowing and joints loosened. Explorations of spinal and joint movements, alignment and breathing help develop greater awareness and physical capacity. Short improvisations inject laughter and fun while stimulating the imagination.
The class ends with a free dance segment, accompanied by a wide range of music, from classical to rock.
Masaki has spent a lifetime surrounded by and immersed in the arts. She has performed in dance companies in Philadelphia, New York and Honolulu and taught at private studios and community colleges on Oahu.
She has a master’s degree in dance from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and studied modern dance with renowned teachers Betty Jones and Fritz Ludin, and ballet with Alaine Haubert, director of American Ballet Theatre’s William Gillespie School at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in California. Masaki grows and processes tea and is a longtime Ashtanga yoga practitioner.
The VAC classes are appropriate for all who love to move. No dance experience is necessary.
Cost for a single class is $20/$15 VAC members or $50 for the entire series (paid in advance) for members and nonmembers. The Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus is located at 19-4074 Old Volcano Road in Volcano Village.
