“A PERFECT DAY FOR AN ALBATROSS” BOOK-SIGNING AND PRESENTATION

Details: Join award-winning author and artist Caren Loebel-Fried for this special event featuring her new picture book. The book is set on Midway Atoll, where Loebel-Fried spent five weeks counting and researching albatrosses. She will share her love of wildlife and passion for conservation through art and story. Guest speaker Cynthia Vanderlip will be on hand to discuss her experiences on Kure Atoll. Copies of the book will be available for sale after the presentations, as well as original framed art and giclees from the book. Free; however, a $5 donation is greatly appreciated.

EXPLORING WOODTURNING WITH AARON HAMMER

Details: This workshop focuses on the lathe. Get hands-on experience with spindle turning (as for chair legs, bottle stoppers and poi pounders), as well as bowl turning. Students will take home several completed projects. Beginners welcome. Ages 13 and older welcome.

THE BIRTH OF KAHUKU

Where: Kahuku Unit, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

When: 9:30 a.m. Saturday

Details: Explore the rich geologic history of Kahuku. Traverse the vast 1868 lava flow, see different volcano features and formations and identify many parts of the Southwest Rift Zone of Mauna Loa. Learn about the Hawaiian hot spot and the creation of Kahuku. Guided easy-to-moderate hike.

LEGO MAKE-AND-TAKE

Where: Hilo Public Library, Children’s Room, 300 Waianuenue Ave., Hilo

Details: Children ages 12 and younger are invited to help “clean up” the library’s LEGO collection. The library will have a supply of LEGO’s that can be used to make a project that can be taken home. Supplies are limited. Free.

19TH ANNUAL TASTE OF HILO

RUN FOR THE DRY FOREST 5K AND 10K RUNS

A special drawing for pieces contributed by the artists is planned for the last day of the event.
