KAILUA-KONA — Fire crews contained a brush fire that scorched 1,645 acres of land in Ka’u.
The blaze, which started in the Waikapuna Bay area, was discovered Thursday and had been 100 percent contained for 36 hours by Monday, said Hawaii Fire Department Battalion Chief Mattias Kusch.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
County helicopters continued water drops and fire crews worked at the borders of the fire Monday to keep it from expanding.
While the Fire Department considers the fire under control, Kusch said, it is so large that fire crews will maintain a presence until the flames are extinguished.
The brush fire started in grazing lands and moved into native dry land forest.
Flames did get about three-quarters of a mile away from a home near the Green Sands Subdivision. Despite that, no evacuations were ordered. As of Monday, no structures or communities were threatened.
Kusch said crews are one good rain away from being done with the blaze.
