Hawaii County Parks Director Charmaine Kamaka and her deputy, Ryan Chong, have resigned their posts.

Hawaii County Parks Director Charmaine Kamaka and her deputy, Ryan Chong, have resigned their posts.

Both submitted their resignations effective last Friday, the Mayor’s Office said.

“We are very grateful for all that Charmaine and Ryan have done for the community,” Mayor Harry Kim said in a press release. “They took on a very difficult task and did good work.”

Roxcie Waltjen, the department’s culture education administrator, has been asked to act as interim director. A letter for her confirmation will be drafted for the County Council this week, the office said.

Kamaka also was parks director under former Mayor Lorraine Inouye. Kamaka and Chong were appointed following Kim’s inauguration last December.

The administration has seen turnover in other department administrators.

The last day for Collins Tomei, finance director, is this Friday. Deputy Finance Director Deanna Sako is being tapped to take his place.

In Public Works, Deputy Director Allan Simeon is leading the department after Frank De Marco resigned as director effective Aug. 31.
