NAALEHU — Firefighters on Sunday continued to douse hot spots and flareups from a brush fire that scorched about 1,600 acres in Ka‘u.
The fire, which was discovered Thursday morning in a remote area of the Ka‘u coastline, continues to burn from Waikapuna Bay to within 0.75 miles of the Green Sands Subdivision, a Hawaii Fire Department official said, confirming that no homes were threatened at the time. The official also said no evacuation was in effect as of press time.
A Green Sands Subdivision resident, who asked not to be identified by name, said the fire had “considerably diminished. The rain and lack of wind today (Sunday) has just left it smoldering.”
Helicopters and bulldozers were continuing to assist in the effort to extinguish the blaze, the official said on Sunday.
Firefighters were to remain on the scene over night and resume operations this morning.
