During the week of Aug. 21-27, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for DUI. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. One was younger than 21.

During the week of Aug. 21-27, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for DUI. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Puna, nine; Kona, seven; and South Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 744 DUI arrests compared to 685 during the same period last year, an increase of 8.6 percent.

There have been 860 major accidents so far this year compared with 934 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.9 percent.

To date, there have been 25 official fatalities compared to 16 during the same period last year, an increase of 56.3 percent.

There also have been four vehicle-related deaths police don’t count toward the official total because two occurred on private property and two in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
