The Office of Maunakea Management, ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center and University of Hawaii at Hilo Department of Physics and Astronomy continues its Maunakea Speaker Series at 7 p.m. today with a talk by anthropology professor Peter Mills at the UH-Hilo Science and Technology Building, Room 108.
Mills will present an overview of his work with geology professor Steve Lundblad in using nondestructive energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence to study the dispersal of ancient Hawaiian stone tools throughout the islands. Their work has helped define the role of the Maunakea adze quarry and other stone tool quarries in ancient Hawaiian economies, interisland voyaging and trade.
The lecture is free and on-campus parking is open and available without charge after 4 p.m.
Mills, an archaeologist, has been making his own stone tools since the 1980s and focuses broadly on issues of Hawaiian culture from pre-contact and colonial eras. He has been teaching at the UH-Hilo since 1997.
The Maunakea Speaker Series gives the community unprecedented access to research taking place on Mauna Kea and other topics unique to Hawaii Island. The series promotes understanding and collaboration across all sectors of the community, while addressing the goals of the UH-Hilo.
