The Big Island Ostomy Group meets at 11:30 a.m. the third Saturday of each month in the cafeteria at Hilo Medical Center. Membership is open to all ostomates, other interested people such as relatives of ostomates, doctors, therapists and nurses. Associate membership is open to those who manufacture or sell ostomy equipment and supplies.

Removal of intestine or the bladder, for example, requires an ostomy. A stoma, an opening in the belly through which urine or feces can be collected and removed, is then needed. Long, healthy lives are possible with an ostomy.
