A Hilo native and St. Joseph’s High School alum has been tabbed to be a Kamehameha Schools trustee.

Elliot Mills, vice president for hotel operations for Disneyland Resorts and Aulani Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, was chosen by a court-appointed screening committee over former public schools superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi and nonprofit executive Timothy Johns, to a post that’s been vacant for almost two years.

Mills was the only candidate of Hawaiian ancestry. He was previously general manager of the Kauai Marriott Resort and serves on boards for the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, Hawaii Community Foundation, HMSA and Hawaii Pacific Health.

Mills’ five-year term starts Oct. 1. The annual compensation is $165,000. He’ll join current trustees Micah Kane, Corbett Kalama, Lance Wilhelm and Robert Nobriga, who have oversight of the educational trust funded by a multi-billion dollar endowment from the estate of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop.
