A head-on collision between between a full-sized truck and a sport-utility vehicle during Wednesday afternoon rush hour closed Queen Kaahumanu Highway near the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery for several hours.

A head-on collision between between a full-sized truck and a sport-utility vehicle during Wednesday afternoon rush hour closed Queen Kaahumanu Highway near the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery for several hours.

Police, fire and emergency medical personnel responded to the 4:36 p.m. alarm near the 88-mile marker of the highway.

The truck driver, a man in his 30s, had to be extricated from his vehicle with the jaws of life. The driver of the SUV, a man in his 60s, and his woman passenger, in her 30s, all sustained injuries, with the woman’s appearing critical, according to a written Fire Department statement.

All were taken to Kona Medical Center for treatment.
