Coupons for $50 worth of fresh produce and honey from local farmers markets are now available for eligible low income seniors and disabled people through the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program.

Coupons for $50 worth of fresh produce and honey from local farmers markets are now available for eligible low income seniors and disabled people through the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program.

Eligibility requirements include:

• Individuals who are at least 60 years old, or Native Americans at least 55 or disabled individuals younger than 60; maximum annual household income of $25,290 for one person or $34,096 for two people, or adding $8,806 per additional household member (including children); and residing in Hawaii County. Each eligible applicant will receive a coupon book containing 10 $5 coupons. Coupons can be redeemed at designated vendors at farmers markets.

Such vendors will display a sign stating they can redeem SFMNP coupons. All coupons must be redeemed by Sept. 30. Coupons can be used for fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey.

The Hawaii County Economic Opportunity Council, a private nonprofit antipoverty organization, is working with the state to provide this program.

Applications are available at participating farmers markets, HCEOC’s Hilo office at 47 Rainbow Drive (next to Rainbow Falls) or online at hceoc.net/forms. Applicants fill in the simple form, mail it to the Honolulu address on the form and wait for a decision in the mail.
