Help prevent substance abuse

ACCESS Capabilities Pahoa invites everyone to a sign-waving event from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Makuu Farmers Market to raise awareness about the affects alcoholism, drug dependency and related diseases have on the community.

The family event also will include free food, resource booths and keiki activities.

The market is located at 15-2131 Keaau-Pahoa Road.

Ka‘u High alumni potluck Aug. 20

The All Ka‘u High School Alumni and Friends will host its 16th annual potluck reunion from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Pahala Community Center.

Those living in Ka‘u and former residents and others having Ka‘u connections are welcome to attend.

Bring a favorite dish to share and enjoy a day of fun, food and live music and entertainment provided by area residents Calvin Ponce and Hands of Time, Chase Cabudol and Hula Halau O‘Mahealani.

Those planning to attend are requested to wear the school’s maroon and white colors. The center also will be decorated in the colors.
