Hearings officer Riki May Amano is recommending approval of the Thirty Meter Telescope’s land use permit.

Hearings officer Riki May Amano is recommending approval of the Thirty Meter Telescope’s land use permit.

Amao, a retired judge, oversaw a lengthy evidentiary hearing for the proposed observatory atop Mauna Kea that lasted more than four months in Hilo. She issued her 303-page recommendation today.

The matter will next go before the state Board of Land and Natural Resources, which will vote on the permit following a hearing.

Project opponents say they intend to take the issue back to the state Supreme Court if the Land Board votes in favor.
