Boys in Hats return to Hilo

The folk-acoustic duo Boys in Hats will perform once again at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Church of the Holy Cross in Hilo.

Eric Anderson and Paul Bryant-Smith have sung together for more than 20 years. The public is invited to enjoy an evening of original songs, traditional sea chanteys from the Age of Sail, folk songs of the British Isles, contemporary acoustic numbers and some sounds of the Hawaiian Islands.

There is no admission fee. The church is located at 440 W. Lanikaula St.

HPA graduate a scholar semifinalist

Sidney Vermeulen, a class of 2017 graduate of Hawaii Preparatory Academy, was named one of 723 semifinalists to advance in the final round of the 2017 U.S. Presidential Scholars competition.

She was one of eight Hawaii semifinalists and the only one from Hawaii Island.

The semifinalists were selected from more than 5,100 students identified as candidates in the program on the basis of superior achievements, leadership qualities, personal character and involvement in community and school activities.

Vermeulen is the daughter of Tom Vermeulen and Koren Kobayashi of Kailua-Kona.

Discover family at genealogy event

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Family History Center is hosting a free genealogy conference from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. July 29 at the Hilo Stake, 1373 Kilauea Ave.

The conference is open to the public and a light lunch will be provided.

This year’s theme is “It Runs In The Family.” Be inspired to learn of your genealogy, identifying family, their talents and legacy that is passed on.

Bon service, dance at Hilo mission

Hilo Higashi Hongwanji Mission invites the community to its hatsu bon service at 6 p.m. and bon dance at 7 p.m. Aug. 12 at the temple, 216 Mohouli St.

The hatsu bon service is a time to pay homage and remember those who died within the past 12 months. Obon is a time to reunite with family and friends.

Food items and refreshments will be available.

Ura bon service will be at 10 a.m. Aug. 13.

Bon dance practices will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Aug. 1 and 8 at the temple social hall, 216 Mohouli St.
