Micah Hoku Carvalho, 40, of Kapaau died June 16. Born in Petaluma, Calif., he was a Stanford University graduate who interned for UNAIDS in Suva, Fiji, and the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission in San Francisco before becoming a research and policy fellow at the Institute of National Gay and Lesbian Task Force in New York, health policy advocate at the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center and policy and communications manager for the Asian Pacific Islanders for Human Rights in Los Angeles. David H. Mokiao Jr., 52, of Kaneohe, Oahu, died June 11 at Hilo Medical Center. He was born in Honolulu. Survived by daughters, Victoria Kaleihokunaui‘o Nalani Mokiao, Nicole Pualani Mokiao, Sara Rochele Burgo and Tazarae Barques; son, Harrison Kananaokalani Mokiao; brothers, Dale Mokiao, Dana Mokiao and Daniel Mokiao; a grandchild. Roberta (Pang) Peiffer, 81, of Riverdale, Utah, formerly of Hilo, died April 26 at home. Born on Oahu, she was a retired civilian U.S. Army employee and a 1954 Hilo High School alumna who worked at the former National Dollar Store and Western Auto in Hilo. Services held. Survived by husband, Burton T. Peiffer; sons, Burton Ted (Anita) Peiffer Jr. and Edward (Julie) Peiffer; daughters, Kalehua (Gerald) Nakamura, Nalani Lin Peiffer and Lori Peiffer; brother, Floyd (Betty Jane) Pang Ching; sister, Rosaline (Samuel) Chun; 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
